Workshop Dates: April 2 - 8, 2024

Check-in and Check-out: You may check-in in the the afternoon/evening of April 2, check-out will be the morning of April 8th.

Food: External workshop participants will stay at the Graham Shimmield Residence Hall. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for external participants.

Accomodations: Participants will be staying in quad dorm rooms. One to two people will be assigned to each quad, everyone will have a private sleeping area but may share a bathroom with one other person. Linens and towels will be provided. The dorm has a communal kitchen and living space for all participants to enjoy. The workshop will be held primarily in the Alfond Room, a seminar space within the dormitory, and group meals will be held in the communal living area of the dorm.

What to Bring:

  • Personal Laptop: All participants are expected to bring a wifi-enabled personal computer to be used to follow along and participate in workshop tutorials.
  • Presentation: One goal of the workshop is to provide networking opportunities for workshop participants to connect and share ideas with other participants and course instructors. To facilitate this, there will be a research symposium on the last day of the workshop. Participants are invited to put together a 10 - 12 minute talk to share during this symposium. Presentations will be projected in the Alfond room via Zoom, so any presentation software is acceptable.
  • Clothing: Early April in Maine is still very early spring, and weather conditions during this time of year are unpredictable. Expect temperatures in the range of 40F - 55F (4C - 10C), and pack accordingly. There is also a good chance of rain, so be sure to pack a rain coat and a pair of boots for the Friday afternoon outing.

Travel: Bigelow Laboratory is located at 60 Bigelow Drive, East Boothbay, Maine, USA. The closest airports are Portland, Maine (PWM) (about 1-hour drive) and Boston-Logan (about 3-hour drive). There is no public transportation to the area. Shuttle information is as follows:

April 2, 2024:

  • 7:30-8:00 PM pickup at Portland International Jetport (PWM)
  • 8:15-8:30 PM pickup at the Portland Transportation Center bus terminal (100 Thompsons Point, Portland, ME 04102)

April 8, 2024:

  • 7:30 AM pickup at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences
  • Drop-off in Portland around 9:00 AM

Shuttle pickup locations:
Airport pickup location will be in front of “Taxi and Limo Service” (lower right hand corner of this map).
Bus terminal pickup location will be in front of the bus terminal entrance (bus terminal located here).
